Brukiewa, Theodore C. – Seaman 1st class

Theodore Carl Brukiewa (Ted) grew up in Philadelphia, PA.  He was born in 1919.  He served twice in the Civilian Conservation Corps, from May 1936 until March of 1939.  His NAVPERS 553 reflects that he was employed at the Naval Ammunition Depot from April 1941 until October 1942, when he enlisted in the US Navy. Ted served from October 1942 until December 1945, at which time he received an Honorable Discharge from The US Navy.

Ted returned to the Philadelphia area.  He met and married his wife Mary, also a veteran, who served in the Women’s Army Axillary Corps from October 1942 until August 1943, then in the Women’s Army Corp from September 1943 until her discharge in November 1945.

Ted served the Navy in many campaigns.  He was a proud member of the “Order of the Polar Bear”, inducted on 7 June 1943, and the “Ancient Order of the Deep” inducted on 2 September 1943.

He was a proud crew member of the USS South Dakota, a photo of her hung on his wall until his death in 2012, just over the age of 93.
