Dedicated to USS South Dakota (BB 57) World War II Battleship

Keeping the Memory Alive

Battleship South Dakota Memorial Foundation was established in 1963 as a nonprofit organization to commemorate USS South Dakota (BB 57). The resulting museum, Battleship South Dakota Memorial, is a tourist attraction that draws visitors from all fifty states and around the world to view artifacts from the ship and its crew members.

We are working to build this new site, which currently looks rather sparse. Check back often to see what's been added.

The mission of Battleship South Dakota Memorial in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is to preserve the history of USS South Dakota (BB 57) and its crew through the operation of a world-class museum that educates current and future generations on the most decorated battleship of World War II.

The South Dakota Battleship X

Battleship X USS South Dakota (BB 57), with its combination of Navy Unit Citation and 13 battle stars, was the most decorated battleship of World War II. For security purposes, she was called “Battleship X” after her first major battles, to prevent the enemy from identifying the top-of-the-line battleship.
